How Much Gold Can You Carry from Dubai to India? 2026 Customs Rules and Duty Explained

Indian customs rules on gold imports are specific and frequently misunderstood. Getting this wrong can cost you more than you saved buying in Dubai. Here are the exact rules as per the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), current as of 2026.

Duty-Free Gold Allowance: The Official Limits

PassengerTime living abroadDuty free gold jewellery
WomanMore than 1 year40 grams
Man or other adultMore than 1 year20 grams
Any passenger1 year or lessNo jewellery allowance
Gold coins or barsAnyNot covered by the allowance

Important: India’s Baggage Rules 2026, in force since 2 February 2026, set the jewellery allowance by weight only. The old ₹50,000 and ₹1,00,000 value caps no longer apply, so a woman who has lived abroad for more than a year can bring the full 40 grams duty free and a man the full 20 grams.

You must still declare jewellery beyond everyday personal use, and customs duty is charged only on the weight above the allowance. Carry the itemised invoice from your Dubai jeweller for every piece.

Duty on Gold Above the Free Limit

Gold above the duty-free allowance, whether jewellery, coins, or bars, is subject to:

  • Basic customs duty: 10%
  • Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC): 5%
  • Total import duty: 15%, in force since 13 May 2026 (it was 6% before)
  • IGST on the assessed value plus duty: 3%

Together, 15% duty and 3% IGST come to roughly 18.5% of the gold’s assessed value on the excess weight. Customs assesses value using its own tariff value, not the price you paid in Dubai, and the baggage rate can differ from the import rate, so check the CBIC website before you fly.

Maximum Gold You Can Bring (With Duty)

There is no hard ceiling on how much gold you can bring into India as a personal import, but amounts above 1kg per passenger attract additional scrutiny and may require prior import licence under certain conditions. For practical purposes, passengers routinely bring up to 500g, 1kg by declaring it and paying duty at customs, without legal issues.

What Happens If You Don’t Declare

Undeclared gold above the duty-free limit is subject to seizure under the Customs Act. Penalties can include confiscation of the gold, a fine of 100 to 300% of the duty evaded, and in serious cases, prosecution. Indian customs uses X-ray scanning and profiling at major international airports, concealment attempts are regularly detected. It is never worth the risk.

UAE Side: Can You Take Gold Out of Dubai?

The UAE has no restrictions on exporting gold for personal use. You can carry gold out of Dubai without declaration to UAE authorities for amounts under AED 100,000 in value. Above AED 100,000, UAE customs requires a declaration (but this is about AML compliance, not prohibition, it’s still fully permitted).
