Why Does Dubai Follow the World Gold Price So Closely?

The UAE dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 since 1997, so the dirham price of gold moves almost exactly with the dollar price. There is no currency effect to soften a rise or a fall, unlike in India or Pakistan.

Dubai jewellers then add a retail margin to set the daily board rate, which is why shop prices sit a little above the figures on this page. The gap is small, so the history above is a good guide to how retail prices moved too.

How Can You Use Gold Price History Before You Buy?

History shows the trend, but it cannot tell you tomorrow’s price. Use it to judge whether today’s rate is close to a recent high or low, not to time the market to the day.

If you buy gold every year for weddings or festivals, compare today’s price with last year’s average in the table. Buying in several smaller amounts through the year smooths out the swings.

Before any purchase, check the gold rate in Dubai today and ask the shop for its making charge per gram in writing.
