How Gold Price Is Calculated in UAE: The Formula, Worked Example and Verification Guide
The price you pay for gold at a Dubai jeweller is not a single number — it’s the sum of several distinct components. Understanding the formula lets you spot overcharging, negotiate intelligently, and compare shops accurately.
The Formula: How UAE Gold Price Is Built
Total price per gram = (International spot price ÷ 31.1035) × AED/USD rate × purity factor + making charges + 5% VAT
Breaking this down:
- International spot price: Quoted in USD per troy ounce on global OTC markets. This is the base that everything else is derived from.
- ÷ 31.1035: Converts from troy ounce (the global standard) to grams. There are 31.1035 grams in 1 troy ounce.
- × AED/USD rate: The AED is pegged at 3.6725 per USD. This conversion is essentially fixed — it never moves for practical purposes.
- × purity factor: 24K = 1.000, 22K = 0.9167, 21K = 0.8750, 18K = 0.7500. This gives you the gold price for the specific carat.
- + making charges: The jeweller’s fee for crafting the piece. Charged per gram, as a flat amount, or as a percentage. This varies widely by shop and design complexity.
- + 5% VAT: Applied to the total of gold value plus making charges.
Worked Example: 10 Grams of 22K Gold
Assume international spot = USD 2,350/troy oz, AED rate = 3.6725, making charge = AED 6/gram:
- Spot per gram in USD: 2,350 ÷ 31.1035 = USD 75.55/gram
- In AED: 75.55 × 3.6725 = AED 277.45/gram (24K)
- For 22K: 277.45 × 0.9167 = AED 254.27/gram
- Gold value for 10g: AED 2,542.70
- Making charges for 10g: AED 60.00
- Subtotal: AED 2,602.70
- 5% VAT: AED 130.14
- Total: AED 2,732.84
Why the DGJG Rate Is Slightly Different From Your Calculation
The Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group (DGJG) publishes a daily reference rate that shops use as their pricing basis. This rate is set in the morning and doesn’t update intraday with the live spot price — it reflects the overnight spot level. If you calculate the gold price using real-time spot and compare to a shop’s displayed price mid-afternoon, there will be a small difference. This is normal and not a sign of overcharging — it reflects the morning vs current spot gap.
How to Verify a Shop Is Charging the Right Gold Rate
Ask the jeweller: “What is your gold rate per gram for 22K today?” It should be close to what you see on our live gold rate page — within AED 2–5 per gram to account for the DGJG lag. If it’s more than AED 8–10 above the live spot-derived price, ask for justification or go elsewhere. Making charges are separate and negotiable — always ask for them broken out from the gold price.
