Quick answer: There is no fixed gram limit, but new jewellery bought in Dubai counts toward the UK personal allowance of £390 for other goods. Above that, you declare it and pay 20% import VAT and any customs duty on the full value, while investment gold bars and coins are exempt from import VAT. GoldRateUAE sets out how much gold from Dubai to the UK a traveller can bring, using the rules published by HMRC on GOV.UK. The live table above shows today’s Dubai price per gram, which helps you work out the value of what you carry.

Many UK residents buy gold in Dubai because UAE jewellery carries 5% VAT, compared with 20% VAT on jewellery in the UK. The saving only holds if you understand the customs rules on the way home.

What Is the UK Allowance for Gold Jewellery?

Arriving in Great Britain from outside the UK, you can bring in other goods worth up to £390 without paying tax or duty. The limit is £270 if you arrive by private plane or boat.

RuleWhat GOV.UK says
Allowance for other goodsUp to £390 per person
Private plane or boatUp to £270
Sharing allowancesYou cannot combine your allowance with anyone else’s
Going overTax and duty are charged on the total value, not just the amount above £390

New gold jewellery bought in Dubai counts as other goods. Jewellery you already owned and took with you from the UK is not a new purchase, so keep proof such as an old receipt or photo.

What Happens if Your Gold Is Worth More Than £390?

You must declare goods over your allowance, either online before you travel or in the red channel at the airport. HMRC then charges import VAT at 20% plus any customs duty due.

Because tax applies to the full value once you go over, a £1,000 piece is taxed on £1,000, not on £610. Not declaring can lead to the gold being seized and a penalty.

Are Gold Bars and Coins Treated Differently?

Yes. Under HMRC’s investment gold rules, imports of investment gold from outside the UK are exempt from VAT.

Gold bars or wafersAt least 995 purity, of a weight accepted by bullion marketsExempt
Gold coinsAt least 900 purity, minted after 1800, legal tender in the country of originExempt

You still declare investment gold that takes you over your allowance. Our 24K gold rate in UAE page shows today’s price for bars and coins of pure gold.

Do You Have to Declare Gold as Cash?

In Great Britain, the £10,000 cash declaration covers notes, coins, bearer bonds, travellers’ cheques and similar instruments. Gold coins, bullion and nuggets are listed as declarable cash only for travel into or out of Northern Ireland.

Separately, gold over your goods allowance is always declared as goods. If you are unsure, declare it.

Travellers who carry gold from Dubai to the UK often underestimate the value once making charges are included. The figure customs looks at is the full price paid, not just the gold content.

How to Work Out the Value in Pounds

1. Check the invoice for weight, karat, gold value, making charge and VAT.

2. Convert the price paid into pounds at the exchange rate on the day.

3. Compare with £390 to see whether you are over the allowance.

4. Keep the invoice with the jewellery for customs.

The gold price calculator for Dubai gives the gold value in dirhams for any weight and karat.

A Worked Example: 22K Bracelet

Say a 10 gram 22K bracelet costs AED 5,040 including making charge and 5% VAT. At an illustrative AED 4.9 to the pound, that is about £1,029, which is over the £390 allowance.

Import VAT at 20% on £1,029 is about £206, plus any customs duty due. If the traveller claims back the UAE VAT as a tourist, the price paid is lower, but the UK charges are worked out on the declared value.

UAE VAT Refund for UK Visitors

UK visitors to the UAE can claim back most of the 5% VAT on jewellery at the airport through the Tax Free scheme. Our guide on claiming the VAT refund at Dubai airport explains the steps.

People who live in the UAE, including British expats, are not tourists for this scheme. They pay the 5% VAT and cannot reclaim it at the airport.

Gold Prices in Dubai and the UK

The gold content is priced from the same world market rate in both countries, so most of the difference comes from VAT and making charges. Our Dubai rate vs international price guide explains how the Dubai rate relates to the world price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring 100 grams of gold jewellery from Dubai to the UK?

Yes, there is no gram limit, but jewellery worth more than £390 must be declared. Import VAT and any duty are then charged on its full value.

No. GOV.UK states that you cannot combine your personal allowance with anyone else’s.

Do I pay VAT on gold bars brought into the UK?

Investment gold bars of at least 995 purity and qualifying gold coins are exempt from UK import VAT. Declare them if they take you over your allowance.
